How to Plan Secure Wi-Fi with WatchGuard AP130 and AP330

Plan coverage, density, PoE, switching, segmentation and cloud management before selecting WatchGuard AP130 or AP330.

Wireless design should not begin with the number of access points. Coverage, client density, building materials, applications, switching and security policies determine the appropriate model and placement.

Understand the environment

Document floor plans, construction materials, ceiling height, expected users, device types, high-density rooms and applications such as voice or video. A predictive design should be validated by an onsite survey where reliable coverage is important.

AP130 positioning

AP130 is a Wi-Fi 6 access point intended for lower-density indoor environments. It is suitable for smaller offices, meeting areas and locations where a standard 1 GbE PoE+ uplink is sufficient.

AP330 positioning

AP330 is designed for medium-density indoor environments and provides a 2.5 GbE PoE+ interface plus a dedicated scanning radio. It is appropriate where client density, monitoring or uplink capacity exceeds an entry-level design.

Plan the wired network

Confirm PoE budget, switch-port speed, VLANs, DHCP, gateway capacity and cabling. A high-capacity access point connected to an inadequate switch or undersized firewall will not deliver the expected result.

Separate users and devices

Guest, staff, operational and IoT traffic should use appropriate SSIDs, VLANs and security policies. WatchGuard Cloud can centralise configuration, monitoring, guest access and reporting for compatible access points.

Validate after deployment

Check signal levels, roaming, channel use, client experience and application performance. Adjust power and channel plans based on measured results rather than assuming the initial design is final.
